Large brush fire - A fire started at a town farm on Harvey’s Hill Melendy Road after
a small brush fire got out of control. This fire would be the most costly and
extensive brush fire in Southern New Hampshire. The fire covered 8 square miles
burning 3300 acres spreading into Pelham and Tyngsboro. Many mutual aid
companies were needed to control the fire which took 2 days to control. One set
of buildings at the Gowing Farm were destroyed in the fire.

Nashua - NH - Rochester Railroad Bridge (abandoned) was the scene of
unannounced Army bridge demolition training blasts - Two blasts in particular
caused considerable damage to the Hudson Community Church shattering all the
stain glass windows in the building and sending church goers into the street in
panic - The Crown Hill section of Nashua had dozens of buildings with broken
glass and similar damage - After much denial and posturing, the Army paid
damages

Machine Gun nest and troops set up on Campbell Ave to protect the Taylor Falls
Bridge. A defense order given that all women were admonished to know how to
change fuses, know how to shut off the water in their homes and to keep a pail
of sand in their attics to extinguish incendiary bombs if dropped.

A heat wave that had temperatures over ninety broke with large severe
thunderstorms striking the area. Lightning struck a barn on Gibson Road and on
arrival of firefighters was fully involved. The area also suffered several
thousand dollars in damage from wind and lightning

Large brush fire - South Hudson - The fire began in Tyngsboro spread into
Hudson consuming a large area of Dracut, River and Pine Roads then spread into
Pelham. Over 800 acres burned. Crews from Hudson, Tyngsboro, Nashua, Pelham,
Hollis, Windham, Westford Mass and trucks from the Mass Conservation Service
battled the blaze through the night.
June 6, 1944 - Hudson - NH -
large brush fire - Windham Road - the fire burned many acres. Crews from
Hudson, Tyngsboro, Nashua, Pelham, Hollis, and Windham are called to the scene
to fight the fire. While crews fought the Windham Road fire, additional fires
were reported on Adelaide Street, Melendy Road, Belknap Road and Lawrence
Corner. All were listed as arson. A person was arrested on June 7th,
for setting all the fires.

Balcom Ice House located on Ottarnic Pond off of Ferry Street - The building,
the largest wooden ice house in the state, was heavily involved on arrival of
crews. The fire was so hot that supply lines were laid from Ferry Street
because crews could not get near the pond to draft. Roofs of two nearby houses
began to burn but quick action by Hudson & Nashua Firefighters saved the
houses. Several brush fires were also started by flying embers from the fire.
The building was a total loss.

Lowell Road at the curve near PMA a single car motor vehicle accident. A car struck
a tree trapping the driver hand tools were used to free the occupant he died of
his injuries.

Webster Street a single car motor vehicle accident car into a tree. The vehicle
wrapped itself around the tree trapping the lone driver. Due to the damage to
the car, it was towed to a local garage with the body still inside were crews
used tools to free the deceased victim.

Fire crews responded to Stuart’s Corner (Lowell & Dracut Roads) for a
building fire. On arrival, a house and barn were fully involved. One farm hand
was injured when he was run over by a wagon trying to remove it from the
burning barn.

Groves Farm Road plane crash. The plane struck a group of pine trees crashing
into the ground both passengers were not injured.

- NH - large brush fire listed by the chief as a conflagration began in the
area of Marsh Road and spread to Old Derry Road. All area towns sent men and
equipment to the scene from as far away as Westford Mass. The fire was so
severe that Hudson crews placed in service a retired GMC truck to haul barrels
of water to the scene.

Week of May 13, 1947 - Hudson
- NH - brush fires - Several arson brush fires were started during the week in
different areas of town. The largest occurred on a Sunday afternoon in the area
of River and Chalifoux Roads. Crews from Nashua, Pelham, Tyngsboro and Dracut
Mass assisted Hudson crews to knock down the 30 acre fire. During the month of
July a large barn fire broke out and the brush fires continued keeping crews
busy.

Hen house fire - Bush Hill Road - A stove in a hen house started a fire that
killed 600 chickens. On arrival crews found two hen houses fully involved with
a nearby house threatened. Lines were setup and the house was saved but 600
chickens were killed in the fire

- Hen house fire - Jasper Farm Old Derry Road - Crews responded to the farm for
a building fire. At the time of the fire, crews were fighting a brush fire on
Lowell Road. The hen house fire started as a brush fire and burned 50 boarder
houses killing 10,000 chickens. Nashua firefighters were called to the scene to
assist with attacking the fire. One farm hand was burned on his face trying to
fight the fire before the arrival of crews.

to a second barn both burn to the ground. A third barn and house are saved by
crews. Lost in the fire were 4400 chicks.

Shed/House fire - Steele Road - A fire in a shed spread to a 10 room single
family house.

House fire - Lowell Road - A home was totally destroyed by a fire sparked by an
oil stove. On arrival heavy fire involved the building. 3500 feet of hose was
laid for a water supply.

build 1951 Ford truck into brush truck. The truck went into service as Engine 4

Department members donate many hours to construct a new fire station on the
corner of School and Library Streets. Members work on the building nights and
weekends and had the building completed in less than one year. Many local
businesses donate materials to the project.
May 29, 1952 - Hudson - NH -
House fire - Kimball Hill Road - A boy lighting fireworks caused a fire on the
roof of a shed. The boy rescued a dog from the shed and attempted to fight the
fire. The fire spread beyond his control and firefighters were called to the
scene. The fire spread to a house close by which at the time was the oldest
dwelling in town built in 1768. The house was a total loss.

House fire - 35 Central Street - Three brothers barely escaped from their
burning house. A passing Taxi Driver reported the blaze. On arrival two of the
brothers had escaped the building the third had to be rescued from a porch roof.
The interior of the house was gutted.

House fire - Dracut Road - sleeping couples were awakened by smoke filling
their bedroom. They found the house heavily involved in fire and escaped
through a bedroom window. After escaping, they found their car was also burning
and had to walk one mile to a neighbors house to report the fire. On arrival of
crews, the house was fully involved and was totally destroyed.

and placed on telephone poles on Chase Street near Ferry Street to alert
members of fire calls.

Station was fully involved in fire on the arrival of first due companies. The
fire destroyed the office, repair shop and storage area.

House fire - A five year old boy suffered second degree burns over his whole
body after a lamp fell into a box of clothing starting a fire. The mother in a
downstairs kitchen heard the boy scream but at the time thought the children
were arguing. After sometime the screams continued she went to investigate and
found the boy standing in the middle of the room enveloped in flames. The
mother put the boy into the shower extinguishing the flames. The boy was taken
to Boston for treatment of his burns.

Apartment fire - Ferry & Library Streets - Ma Bradley’s Store suffered fire
damage from a kitchen fire in her apartment. Mrs. Bradley and her four children
escaped without injury but Mr. Bradley suffered smoke inhalation.

A small plane made an emergency landing in a potato field off of Webster
Street. Crews responded to the scene with the plane making a safe landing.

Vehicle accident - Lowell & Pelham Roads - A car skidded on ice with the
driver losing control of the vehicle striking a parked car then crashing into a
roadside stand injuring the vehicles passenger.

Fatal vehicle accident - Lowell Road at Stuarts Corner - On this Friday the 13th,
a motor vehicle accident ended a five year record the town held with no fatal
accidents. The single vehicle struck a 200 pound boulder throwing the boulder
15 feet then struck a large elm tree killing the driver.

Church fire - Library Street - A small fire was set in a stack of books in St.
John’s Church was contained quickly by crews. After a month of investigating
and the questioning of thirty children, a 12 year old boy admitted to setting
the fire because he wanted a little excitement.

Fatal vehicle accident - Windham Road - A single vehicle accident killed a 17
year old boy after the driver lost control and struck a telephone pole.

House fire - 14 Alpine Ave - A fire starting in the kitchen caused heavy damage
to a single family home. A neighbor called in the fire and on arrival, fire was
burning in the kitchen and a second floor bedroom.

Church fire - Library Street - A second fire at St. John’s Church caused
several thousand dollars damage. The fire started in a partition near a kitchen
service window causing damage to the kitchen area and smoke damage throughout
the church.

Fatal vehicle accident - River Road - What was called the worst accident in
years took place a mile north of the Mass Line. The driver of the car lost
control traveled 400 feet off the road striking a large pine tree ricocheting
off continuing another 60 feet striking a steel and barb wire fence tearing
down about 30 feet of it and then wrapping around a second tree. The driver was
found underneath the vehicle and only suffered cuts and bruises.

Arson house fire - Derry Road - The fire destroyed an unoccupied house. On
arrival of crews the building was fully involved and burned to the ground.

House fire - 35 ½ Highland Street - The fire injured two residents. On arrival
heavy fire was showing from the 1½ story house. Both residents suffered burns
when they tried to extinguish the fire that was started by a cigarette.

At the time of the fire it was believed two boys were in the house. The mother
was injured when she broke windows attempting to search the house.

Drowning - Robinson Pond - A 52 year old man drowned after he jumped into the
pond. Others jumped into the pond to rescue him but he did not survive.

Explosion - Dracut Road - A resident digging a well in his back yard was killed
when dynamite exploded killing him. As the man was breaking shale in the well
the dynamite was struck setting it off.

Building fire - Lowell Road - A truck under repair at Fredettes Auto Body
backfired igniting some gasoline sparking a flash fire. Insulation in the walls
were burned causing minor damage to the building.

Building fire - 194 Central Street - A fire involving the attic and roof of a 2
½ story home kept crews busy. One resident was treated for shock with a second
bedridden resident being carried from the burning home.

Building fire - Roosevelt Ave - A family of 11 were left homeless after an oil
stove exploded in their home. The owner was near the stove at the time of the
explosion but was not injured. The house was totally destroyed.

Lightning strike - Newhall Ave - A lightning strike hit a tree, then a house.
The bolt then entered a wall ripped up the flooring, blowing off the legs from
a bed and starting a fire. The fire was held to the one room. Nails from the
flooring were found embedded into the ceiling.

General Alarm Fire - Main at Park Streets - Hudson crews assisted Nashua,
Manchester, Milford and Lowell Mass crews control the fire in a three story
brick building with stores on the first floor, offices on the second floor and
apartments on the third floor. Thirty four firefighters were injured during the
fire. Five hours into the fire, the first flames could be scene outside the
building. It took seven hours to control the fire.

exploded. The resident called the fire in but dropped the phone before he gave
the address delaying crews arriving on the scene. The trailer was a total loss.

Wall collapse - Webster Street - A cement wall fell on a resident as he was
repairing a crack. Fifty people assisted crews to dig him from under the wall.
He died later at the hospital.

Sawmill fire - Windham Road - The fire at Balcoms Sawmill required a tanker
from Hudson to assist with water supply.

Fatal motor vehicle accident - Hudson Speedway Old Derry Road - A race car
driver last control of his car rolling over three times. He had to be
extricated from the car. He died later at the hospital.

Double fatal motor vehicle accident - Kimball Hill Rd - A car carrying 4
teen-age boys struck a tree wrapping around the tree. Three of the boys were
freed on the scene after 45 minutes of work. Due to the damage to the car the
body of the fourth boy remained in the vehicle and was towed to Tiny’s garage
were crews worked for another 45 minutes to free his body.

Train/propane truck accident with explosion - Hills Ferry Road - A family of
five riding in the truck along with the trains engineer were killed in the
crash. The bodies of the family were found hundreds of feet from the crash
site. One passenger train car caught on fire after the explosion requiring many
passengers to flee for their lives. Many were injured.

Head-on motor vehicle accident - Derry Road - A woman blinded by the sun
swerves into oncoming traffic hitting a second car head-on. The driver of the
second car turned out to be her husband. Both of their cars were destroyed. A
passenger in the husband’s car was transported to the hospital with minor
injuries.

General alarm fire - Main Street - A police officer spotted fire coming from
the roof of the Beason Block. Hudson crews responded to the scene after
additional alarms were sounded. Hudson crews searched the building and found a
group of men playing cards on the third floor totally unaware of the large fire
consuming the building. They were evacuated safely.

Fatal accident - Hudson Speedway Old Derry Rd - Race driver repairing his car
when he was struck by a wheel after it broke away from a car in a race. The
wheel broke through a fence and struck the victim in the head.

Fatal house fire - 31 Central Street - A fire in a closet had been burning for
sometime when the resident tried to extinguish the fire burning material fell
on him, setting his clothes on fire. The man suffered severe burns and later
died from his injuries.

Clement Road - House, barn & shed fire - A family of 11 lost their home in
the fire. Two attempts were made to call the fire department from two neighbors
homes but the phone lines were out. The house collapsed with in thirty minutes
with both the shed and barn burning to the ground.

cab placed on 1934 Ariens Fox City Service Ladder Truck. The truck remained in
service with this cab into the 1970‘s.

Arson building fire - Winn Ave - A 9 year-old boy set a fire in the State
Pattern Company. The boy poured gasoline into an electric motor to start the
fire. His parents later in the day notified the police he had started the fire.

caused heavy damage to the home.

Arson spree - Downtown - Four fires were set in the downtown area of Nashua.
Hudson crews responded to a building fire at 68 East Pearl Street. On arrival
they found a stack of burning papers in a hallway. The fire was quickly
contained. Hudson crews then were sent to 142 Main Street again for a building
fire. On arrival they found a fire in a second floor hallway which had been
contained by sprinklers. Its unknown if the arsonist was caught.

Drowning - Dracut Road - A 9 year-old boy drowns in a shallow pond. Lifesaving
measures did not save his life.

Numerous buildings involved - West Hollis Street - A tanker from Hudson
responded to the scene. Fire was sparked lightning which struck a garage and
spread to several nearby farm buildings.

Trailer fire - 162 Ferry Street - A house trailer suffered heavy damage during
the noon time fire.
Dec 10, 1962 - Litchfield -
NH - Barn fire - Charles Bancroft Highway - Hudson crews assisted Litchfield
knocking down a large barn fire. A tank located in the front of the barn
exploded and a nearby house was damaged. A car with five teenager’s enroute to
watch the fire crashed on Page Road requiring all to be transported to the
hospital with injuries.

Building fire with two fatalities - Broadway - Heavy fire involved the second
and third floors of the 3 story building. The fire spread to a second three
story building. Hudson crews responded to the scene along with companies from 8
other departments. Two residents lost their lives in the blaze.

Numerous buildings and brush - Mammoth Road - Hudson along with crews from 3
other departments assisted Pelham knock down a fire that involved 3 farm
buildings and 5 acres of brush.

Barn fire - Groton Road - Hudson along with tankers from 2 other towns assisted
Nashua attack a fire in a 40’ by 50’ 1 ½ story barn. The fire was sparked by a
lightning strike.

Fatal motor vehicle accident - Lowell Road - A single car struck a telephone
pole and then rolled over several times. One occupant was killed the passenger
suffered severe injuries.

Drowning - Merrimack River near Ferry Street - A boy fishing watched a woman
walk into the river and did not surface. Crews and a boat were called to the
scene. Firefighter Ray Parker a trained Scuba Diver was called to the scene to
search the river. The woman’s body was found by Firefighter Parker a short
later.

Barn fire - Middle Dunstable Road - An abandoned barn burned to the ground and
sparked a large brush fire which would require 5 ½ hours to control. A nearby
water hole was dried up due to a drought in the area.

House fire - Windham Road - A family of five was injured when fire tore through
their home. Fire blocked the families exit and escape out a second floor
window. The owner of the home had to pass through the flames to rescue his wife
and children. He suffered burns, two children and the wife suffered smoke
inhalation and a third child suffered cuts.

- House fire - unknown location - Hudson crews responded to the scene after a
neighbor notified the department of the fire because Litchfield Fire could not
be reached. A passerby drove to the Litchfield Station and took a truck to the
scene. The house burned to the ground.

Trailer fire - 163 Ferry Street - Heavy smoke was showing from the trailer on
arrival of crews. All furnishings in the trailer were lost in the fire.

Fatal house fire - 11 Rita Street - A nine year-old girl died and 4 other
siblings were injured when fire spread through their home. Heavy fire involved
the first floor of the home and crews could not enter. Ladders were placed to
windows on the second floor for firefighters to make a search. The four injured
children were unresponsive when firefighters removed them from the building.
The child that died was found in a second bedroom and could not be revived. One
firefighter was injured during the rescue operation.

Building fire - Marsh Road Whip-Poor-Will Golf Course - Club House fully
involved on arrival of crews. Heat from the fire scorched the greens 75’ away.

Restaurant Fire - Ferry Street Pines Acres Restaurant - On arrival of crews,
heavy smoke was showing from the building. Six lines were used to protect a
nearby house and pine grove. A Deputy Chief injured his ribs when he fell from
a six-foot retaining wall. A small portion of the building was left standing.

vehicle lost control striking a large tree and rolling over. He died from his
injuries a few days later.

Fatal motorcycle accident - Belknap Road - A passenger on the motorcycle died
from her injuries after the bike she was riding on hit a car head-on. The
impact of the crash was so great that the motorcycle was imbedded two feet into
the front of the car. The victim’s shoes were found 68 feet from the point of
impact.

winds. Several homes on Highland Street were threatened by the fast moving

from Nashua assisted Litchfield controlling a house fire that spread to a barn.
Both were destroyed in the fire.

fatal car accident - Lowell Road - The first recorded fatal accident for the
year in the state took place in town. A single vehicle struck a telephone pole
tearing the passenger doors from the car then the car rolled over several
times. The driver was ejected in the crash with the vehicle landing on her. The
victim died on the scene.

General alarm fire - Main Street - Hudson crews assisted companies from Nashua,
Manchester, Derry, Milford, Hollis, Merrimack and Chelmsford Mass control a
huge fire in a 97 year-old 2 story hardware store. Within arrival of crews the
building became fully involved shooting flames 50 to 60 feet out the front of
the building. One Nashua engine was damage when a wall collapsed onto it.

after the motorcycle she was riding went off the road throwing her to the
ground. The victim was not wearing a helmet. Three days after the accident the
State of New Hampshire placed into affect a helmet law.

Double fatal motor vehicle accident - River Road - The head-on crash trapped
people in both vehicles. Crews used saws to free the trapped victims in the
cars. After working for over an hour, all victims were freed but two died from
their injuries.

front of her school bus and was struck by a truck. She died from her injuries a

sign when a gust of wind blew the cable holding the sign into a wire carrying
20,000 volts. One worker died and the other suffered severe burns.

Fatal landslide - Lowell Road - Jacques Field - A 40 foot wall of sand covered
a boy playing on the pile. Two boys began to dig for their friend while a third
ran for help. Before rescue crews could dig the boy out he died from
asphyxiation.

Brush fire - Memorial Drive - Memorial School - Four and a half acres of brush
burned in the woods behind the school. Over a half mile of hose was taken into
the woods to fight the fire.

ever to strike town, destroyed 3/4 of the building. Fire started in gymnasium
and spread causing over $5,000,000 damage. Crews from Nashua, Litchfield,
Pelham, Windham, Londonderry and Salem assisted controlling the fire.

showing on arrival of crews. Deck guns were used to control the fire in the
barn but flames had spread into an attached garage which became heavily
involved.

NH - Apartment building explosion with injuries - Derry Road - A building
suffered a large explosion which blew the front wall off the building. Two men
rescued a paraplegic resident lying on the floor in one heavily involved
apartment. Both men suffered burns during the rescue. A second resident was
taken to the hospital for burns.

one garage and spread to a second requiring Hudson crews to the scene to help
control the fire.

engine placed in service built by American LaFrance. Engine 3 had a 2200 foot
large diameter hose real in the back and was the first Lime Green truck placed
in service.
1975 - First full-time firefighters
begin working shifts. The firefighters were Lieutenant Ray Carter, Firefighters
John Abbott, Mike Boilard and George Roy. Their shift was from 08:00 to 17:00
hours daily.

a fire in a large garage.

House fire - 10 Regina Street - A resident spotted sparks shooting from a
television set. Sparks were still coming from the TV as crews arrived then the
room suddenly burst into flames. The fire caused heavy damage to the basement
of the home.

attached garage. Crews stopped the fire from spreading to the house.

Barn fire - Robinson Road - Hudson, Derry, Salem and Windham crews assisted
Pelham control a fire in the barn. Burning embers from the fire caused several
sizeable brush fires. The cause of the fire was a cow kicked over a heating
lamp.

killed a 20 year old man and a 17 year old boy. When the car rolled, the roof
was torn off ejecting several passengers. Two Hudson ambulances transported
four injured patients from the scene.

NH - Double fatal motor vehicle accident - Charles Bancroft Highway - Two
Hudson ambulances and the rescue responded to the scene. The driver lost
control of the car and struck a tree. Three passengers were in the car and it
took crews 1 hour to extricate them. Officials stated it was the worst crash
they had seen.

3 alarms - West Hollis Street - St. Louis De Gonzague Church - the fire was
spotted by a passing police officer. Extra alarms were quickly sounded bring
crews from Hudson, Merrimack and Manchester to the scene. Hudson crews outdid
their Nashua brothers - Hudson’s ladder used manpower to set the manual
outriggers where Nashua’s ladder was hydraulically set up. Hudson crews had
their ladder set up and flowing water before Nashua could.

fully involved on arrival. Crews from Hudson, Londonderry and Dracut Mass
assisted at the scene.

pond. Crews from Hudson, Nashua Police and the East Derry Dive Team assisted at
the scene.

rear of the house. The barn burned to the ground but the house was saved. A
Hudson engine and two tankers along with crews from Londonderry, East Derry and
Manchester responded to the scene.

from a meeting spotted a fully involved barn fire and called Litchfield crews

bedroom of the home. A Hudson engine and tanker responded to the scene.

Apartment house fire - Thayer Court - Fire companies responded to a street box
and on arrival they found heavy fire and smoke showing from the 2 ½ story
building. Additional alarms were sounded bringing Hudson crews to the scene.

nineteen year old man was shot during a robbery, He was transported by
ambulance crews, he survived his injury.

3 alarms - Bowers Street & Harbor Ave - Big T Linen - A watchman discovered
the fire on his rounds when heavy smoke was coming from the building. The fire
was fought in a heavy snowstorm. Hudson Engine 3 laid 2200 feet of 4” hose from
Main Street to the fire scene.

Building fire - Kimball Hill Road - Red Rooster Restaurant - A fire began in
the building but the lack of oxygen reduced to the smolder stage. When workers
arrived in the morning they found the building full of smoke.

House fire - Burnshill Road - a house without electricity or phone service was
destroyed after a heating stove ignited some material. The resident of the
building drove to Central Station to report the fire.

alarms - Central Street - Firefighter Richard Marshall on his way home after
his shift spotted the fire and pulled the box at Central & Hurley Streets.
Heavy fire burned through the roof of the meeting hall building. A Nashua
engine and ladder were called to the scene. Two juveniles were arrested for
starting the fire.

Dec 9, 1977 - Hudson - NH - Fatal pedestrian accident - Derry Street - A 20
year old male walking in the middle of the road was hit by a plow truck. He
died from his injuries.
